Split Airport was built and open on November 25, 1966, and since then the number of passengers arriving in Split area grew year after year. The exception to the growth were 1988 due to economic crisis & 1991 when the airport was detained due to war till April 1992.
Split Airport has more than a hundred flights per day during the summer months, connected by direct flights to 60 European airlines, which links Split as the main centre of Dalmatia with 108 destinations in Europe.
Over the past eight years, Split Airport has recorded an increase in the number of passengers each year, and their number has risen from 1.2 million in 2010 up to last year’s record of 2.8 million. According to the announcements of a great tourist and nautical season, by the end of this year, it is expected that over 3 million passengers will fly through Split Airport.
NEW SPLIT AIRPORT TERMINAL
The surge in numbers has out the strain on current infrastructure and capacity of Split Airport. SPLIT, the busiest of all the Croatian coastal airports, and second busiest in the country, has been experiencing severe growing pains, which reflected on our guest first impressions. Soon this will change with the construction of the new terminal that is under construction since early 2018. As per reports, progress has been good so far, things are in on track for the new Split Airport terminal to open on schedule in July 2019. After the new terminal is opened, the old terminal will be overhauled and incorporated in the new one. Split Airport will get 35,000 square meters of the new passenger terminal, Airport will get a new bus station, a new parking space with 50 buses and 900 car seats, and a pedestrian bridge will be built. Finlay the airport will become a 24-hour airport from summer 2019.
New Split Airport Terminal on Schedule for July 2019
Interestingly, the expansion is being funded by the airport own means and that is not all. The distance between the Split airport and Split old town centre will be covered in only 15 minutes of the pleasant ride with the motor catamaran. From June to the end of October every 1,5 hour daily, passengers from the Split airport will be able to choose water ride to the ferry port of Split.
Ocean Sailing House home port Marina Kastela is contacted to Split airport via short taxi car or Uber ride, but we do hope it will become one of the catamaran line stops. We will keep You posted on the progress – sign up for our Newsletter!
